Low impact exterior lighting has been installed.

The view through the skylight is wonderful. The natural light it brings will create such a welcoming environment for staff and clients.

The majority of the exterior of the structure itself is complete with final grading, paving and landscaping to come.

The interior colors are warm and welcoming as seen in this photograph of one of our adolescent group rooms.

The item on the wall covered in paper is one of the "air walls" that will divide this group into two separate rooms or open as seen here for larger functions.

This is a picture of one of the nine detox client bedrooms that will house up to 16 clients.

Two day rooms are available for detox clients.

The landscaping has started with shrubs being planted now.

December Happenings

The skylight was lifted into place.

The skylight will provide beautiful natural light at the main entrance and center common area.

Some very heavy lifting took place with the installation of the emergency power generator.

November Happenings

One of the most impressive events during the month of November was the installation of the Detox Nurses Station. The mill work really adds to the professional look our clients will see.

Much of the cabinets were installed during the month to include these in the resource center work room. They will have plenty of room to store materials.

The client accounts collections area will be more obvious in the new facility. Clients will have access at two separate windows to settle accounts.

The resource center will be full of light thanks to the skylight and window wall. This will be a great feature in the new facility.

Sidewalks, Interior Paint, Windows and Cabinets

As construction continues, they are working on the sidewalks and remaining parking lot curbing, cabinets have been installed in the inpatient/detox area as well as the first coats of interior paint. Most of the exterior door frames and window casings have been installed.

The LEED processes continue as permanent power has been switched on to the lower level and the air handling units are being prepped for start up. In doing so, all return air vents are covered with a special filtration material to prevent containments from being pulled into the system. This will help maintain the indoor air quality required for the LEED program.

LEED Construction Process

In all aspects of the construction for the new Richland County facility, LRADAC is pursuing Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. This includes everything from energy efficiency designs to recyclable construction principles to help the environment. In doing so, clean air and recycling are two very important factors. As you see in the photo of the HVAC duct (rectangular metal box) the ends are sealed with a cellophane-type material to keep the duct work clean and contaminant free until it is installed. The blue material is removed immediately prior to installation to help keep the ventilation system clean, thereby increasing the indoor air quality. Indoor air quality is continuously monitored even during the construction process.

Recycling is another very important part of the LEED construction process. As of today, 90% of all construction debris has been diverted from the landfill and sent to recycling centers; therefore, reducing wasted as the result of the construction process. Below is a picture of containers located inside the facility for recycling.

The brickwork on the exterior is moving right along.

The view below is from just inside the main entrance. The skylight will provide an openness when clients enter the new facility.

Exterior Walls Framed and Finish Roofing

All exterior walls have been framed and main floor interior wall framing has begun. From the aerial view, you can see the finish roofing and the overall shape of the facility.

Massive air handlers that will provide high air quality ventilation to the new building are being positioned for installation. The view from the street has changed significantly as all the steel and roof structure has been put into place. The finish roofing material is being installed with consideration for energy efficiency being given to the color and material to assist with lower energy costs. In the Adult Services end, the sub-ceiling drywall has been installed along with the main heating/ventilation/air conditioning (HVAC) trunk lines that will supply cool, warm and clean air throughout the building.

Roof Trusses Complete

The major portions of roof trusses are complete. Roof decking for the remainder starts this week as does finish roofing on the righthand portion of the building. Interior wall framing is almost complete in Detox and the fire suppression system is being installed. The middle photo is from just outside the main front doors of the facility.

Trusses are installed above the Adult Services end of the building. The back fill is complete and footings started on the center section of the building. The staircase from the lower level is being installed.

The backfill is almost complete behind the retaining wall and the the first trusses are being set in place with more continuing throughout the day.

The third picture is from the ADASP corner on the front of the building looking back through two groups rooms towards the adolescent area.

The fourth picture is from the adolescent area looking towards the front of the building. The beam at the top of this photo will support the air wall used to divide or join two groups rooms. The rectangle in middle of the photo is the structural support for the elevator. The hole in the floor just to the left in front of the rectangle will be the stairwell down to the lower level of the building.

Backfill underway

The pouring of the 2nd level concrete began during the night. Backfilling of the retaining wall started once the upper level concrete was poured.

Construction progress has been very visible the past couple of weeks as some of the steel has been errected. The steel for the detox and adult services end of the building has been set in place. You can now start to see more of the size and shape of the new building.

If you have driven by the last few weeks, you may question if any work in going on. Actually there has been as the necessary work underground has taken place to prepare the building for the concrete slab and the steel that is now ready to go up.

LRADAC is seeking LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for this new facility. What does that mean?

Just as CARF provides standards for LRADAC’s programs, LEED certification is the recognized standard for measuring building sustainability. Achieving LEED certification is the best way to demonstrate that a building project is truly “green.”

The LEED green building (point) rating system is designed to promote design and construction practices that help reduce the negative environmental impact of buildings and improve occupant health and well being. In order to be certified, there is a rigorous third-party “commissioning” process that provides proof that we have achieved our environmental goals and the building is performing as designed.

As the construction progresses, we provide additional information on the various LEED points we are trying to achieve. A couple of the points we have elected to pursue involve our parking lots. We will get points for providing preferred parking for “low-emitting and fuel efficient vehicles” and for staff who ride bicycles. Staff who ride bicycles to work will also have access to a “locker room” on the lower level for showering and changing.

The land near the Gregg Street end of the property is being cleared and graded to establish another parking lot and to provide for a retention pond at the corner of the site.

Work has started on installing the rebar for the 17 foot retaining wall which establishes the two-story section of the building.

This is the area that has been trenched out for installing the large concrete pipes to handle storm water run off. This runs adjacent to the Gregg Street extension which leads down to the Columbia Area Mental Health building.

While the LRADAC staff were all home watching the TV to find out about the delayed business opening on Tuesday, January 20th, the construction workers on the job site were busy making us the first snowman on the new facility construction site.
